Most experts, including the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the American Society of Home Inspector’s (ASHI) recommend that dryer vents be cleaned and inspected at least ONCE PER YEAR.

  • According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), “More home clothes dryer fires occur in the Fall and Winter months, peaking in January”.

You do a large number of wash-loads per week. This increases your chance of lint build-up in your dryer’s venting system.

  • You clean a lot of bulkier materials, such as towels, blankets, sweaters, or fleece, which produce more lint.
  • A dryer vent system is longer than recommended, includes multiple angles, or includes materials or installation that slows the air flow. This can cause lint to gather in the passage, and should be rerouted or cleaned and inspected two or more times per year.
  • You buy a lot of new clothing, you may require more frequent inspection and/or cleaning of the ventilation system. New clothing produces more lint than older clothes that have been washed several times.
  • You have pets. Hair from pets can add to dryer vents clogging more frequently than normal.
  • You are experiencing any of the “Warning Signs” on the previous menu tab.
